Gondolas were once the primary form of transportation in Venice. During the 18th century, several thousand gondolas transported people across the canals. Today, only several hundred gondolas transport people today, primarily tourists. An old law once required that all gondolas be painted black. The gondolas are still painted black, in what has now become a custom.
